Baker McKenzie Advises Alpiq on Battery Storage Agreement with ToRa in Saxony

Baker McKenzie advised Alpiq on an agreement with project developer ToRa GmbH for the development of a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Saxony, Germany. The transaction concerns a BESS project with a minimum installed power capacity of 36 megawatts and a storage capacity of 144 megawatt hours. The facility is expected to be ready for construction in the first quarter of 2026, with commissioning planned for the second quarter of 2028. Alpiq, a leading Swiss electricity producer and energy service provider headquartered in Lausanne, has a long history in highly flexible power plants, including hydro pumped storage and gas. The company is pursuing a growth strategy in flexible power plants and storage facilities and has recently secured a BESS project pipeline of 370 megawatts in the German states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. Alpiq operates across Europe and is one of the largest direct marketers of renewable energy in Germany, employing around 1,350 people. The project is being developed by ToRa GmbH, a renewable energy service company based in Leer (Lower Saxony). Founded in 2020, ToRa specialises in the full value chain of wind and solar projects. Combined with Alpiq’s operating and optimisation expertise for flexible assets and its financial strength, the partnership is positioned to pursue projects in the competitive German battery storage market.
