Mishcon de Reya advised UK-based AI materials start-up Mater-AI on its £1.5 million pre-seed funding round and participated in the round through its Mishcon PLUS investment vehicle. The transaction comprised a £1.5 million pre-seed investment round led by Twin Path Ventures, with additional participation from One Planet Capital, XTX Ventures, the Conception X Angel Syndicate, Koro Capital and Tailored Solutions. Mishcon de Reya both advised Mater-AI and invested in the round via Mishcon PLUS. Mater-AI has developed a platform that combines artificial intelligence and physics-based modelling to accelerate discovery of thermoelectric materials that convert waste heat into electricity or provide cooling without refrigerants. The technology aims to deliver greater efficiency, lower cost and improved scalability compared with traditional approaches. The company is initially focusing on thermoelectric generators for defence, automotive and industrial IoT applications, with potential uses including powering defence systems quietly, extending battery life and enabling self-powered sensors for machinery and infrastructure monitoring. Founded by Dr Nickel Blankevoort (CEO), Gatleen Bhambra (COO) and Chelsea Williams (CTO), Mater-AI builds on Dr Blankevoort’s research at the University of Warwick in theoretical modelling of quantum nanoelectronics and thermoelectrics. The company has established partnerships with the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London and the Henry Royce Institute to validate materials in the laboratory and scale toward commercial applications. The new funding will be used to accelerate research and development and to expand the team. Mishcon de Reya represented Mater-AI with a team composed by: Andrew Wolfin, Partner; Dan Sinclair, Partner.
