Oliverio & Partners advises Miaenergia and SBV Holding on development of 265 MW stand-alone BESS in Southern Italy

Oliverio & Partners represented Miaenergia and SBV Holding in structuring a club deal for the development, permitting and ownership of a portfolio of stand-alone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects totalling 265 MW located in Southern Italy. The transaction brings together industrial investors to create a dedicated platform for the development and operation of utility-scale energy storage. The platform is intended to enable greater penetration of renewable generation and to increase the flexibility and security of the national electricity system. According to the parties, BESS is considered an energy asset class of the future on the basis of clear structural fundamentals: the growth of intermittent renewable generation, rising wholesale price volatility and the consequent need for flexibility and balancing services. These factors are expected to produce attractive returns even in the absence of MACSE auctions, relying on merchant revenues (hourly price arbitrage), grid services and potential long-term arrangements with industrial counterparties and energy traders. The development programme envisions a pipeline of projects sited in strategic areas of Southern Italy chosen for available network capacity, the presence of renewable generation and alignment with national energy planning.
