Mammoth Hockey Seeks Injunction to Block NHL Team Name Utah Mammoth

"Carter Ledyard represented Mammoth Hockey LLC in filing a motion for preliminary injunction in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah to prevent the NHL’s new Utah franchise from using the name Utah Mammoth. Mammoth Hockey, founded in 2014, alleges reverse confusion and says the team’s merchandising and search results undermine its longstanding MAMMOTH HOCKEY brand."

Carter Ledyard represented Mammoth Hockey LLC in filing a motion for preliminary injunction in the United States District Court for the District of Utah (Case No.: 2:25-cv-00639-DB) to prevent the NHL’s new Utah franchise from using the name Utah Mammoth. Mammoth Hockey LLC, a Portland, Oregon small business founded in 2014 by Erik Olson and Lars Huschke and known for its rugged MAMMOTH HOCKEY equipment bags, asks the court to protect its long-established brand. The company alleges that the NHL team’s May 7, 2025 adoption of the “Utah Mammoth” name has produced a textbook case of reverse confusion, in which a significantly larger newcomer overwhelms and displaces recognition of a prior, smaller mark. Mammoth Hockey asserts the Utah franchise knew of the company’s prior use yet did not seek an agreement, unlike other brands whose names were considered. Since the team began selling Utah Mammoth merchandise this spring, Mammoth Hockey reports that online searches for its products now direct consumers first to the NHL team’s store, creating marketplace confusion and undermining Mammoth Hockey’s identity. The motion for preliminary injunction seeks to enjoin the team’s use of the disputed name while the litigation proceeds; Mammoth Hockey emphasizes its intent to continue providing high-quality gear to players across North America. Carter Ledyard represented Mammoth Hockey LLC with a team composed by: Jennifer Topper, Director, Marketing & Business Development. Mammoth Hockey LLC was assisted in-house by company principals with a team composed by: Erik Olson, Co-founder; Lars Huschke, Co-founder.
