Magnusson represents Municipality of Jönköping in Simsholmen wastewater treatment plant environmental permit process

"Magnusson represented the Municipality of Jönköping in the environmental permit application and subsequent appeal for continued and expanded operations at the Simsholmen wastewater treatment plant. The application was filed in June 2020; a permit was issued in May 2024 and later amended by the Land and Environment Court in October 2025. Sweco provided the environmental impact assessment and technical support."

Law firm Magnusson represented the Municipality of Jönköping in the environmental permit process for the Simsholmen wastewater treatment plant, while consultancy Sweco provided the environmental impact assessment and technical expertise. Magnusson submitted the permit application to the Environmental Assessment Delegation in June 2020 on behalf of the Municipality of Jönköping. The application concerned continued and expanded wastewater treatment operations at the Simsholmen facility and included, among other elements, the construction of a new biological treatment stage. In May 2024 the Municipality obtained an environmental permit, but the permit was issued with conditions that deviated from established practice. Magnusson was instructed to appeal the decision to the Land and Environment Court; in October 2025 the court amended the permit and its conditions in accordance with Magnusson’s claims. The proceedings involved complex legal considerations owing to the plant’s unusually central location near the region’s main drinking water supply. The assignment was carried out in close collaboration with Sweco, which prepared the environmental impact assessment and contributed technical expertise to ensure the facility meets modern environmental requirements. Magnusson represented the Municipality of Jönköping with a team composed by: Mårten Tagaeus, responsible partner, environmental law; Sascha Andersson, environmental law. Mårten Tagaeus, partner at Magnusson, said the firm was pleased to have assisted the Municipality of Jönköping in this important process, which enables both the modernisation of the wastewater treatment plant and the municipality’s future expansion.
