Becker Secures $100,000 Settlement From Town of Miami Lakes and Is Fully Vindicated

Becker represented itself in obtaining a settlement with The Miami Lakes Town Council. The firm secured a $100,000 settlement that fully resolves the municipality’s lawsuit alleging there was a professional services agreement between Becker and the Town of Miami Lakes that, the firm says, never existed. The dispute traces to 2013 and the arrest of the town’s mayor, who was later acquitted after a jury trial. After the mayor settled with Becker, the town sought to extend liability to the firm based on the brief employment of a former Becker lobbyist. Earlier in the year, a state magistrate judge recommended that the court grant Becker’s motion to strike the town’s breach-of-contract complaint as a sham pleading and approve Becker’s motion for summary judgment. Becker’s managing shareholder stated that the magistrate found the town had no contract with the firm and that the allegations constituted a rare sham lawsuit under Florida law.
