Eversheds Sutherland Advises AMP Robotics on 20-Year Recycling Contract with Southeastern Public Service Authority of Virginia

"Eversheds Sutherland advised AMP Robotics and its affiliate Commonwealth Sortation LLC on a 20-year contract with the Southeastern Public Service Authority of Virginia (SPSA) to provide solid waste processing and recycling services across SPSA’s eight member communities, scaling AMP’s MSW sorting and organics management technology region‑wide."

Eversheds Sutherland advised AMP Robotics, through its affiliate Commonwealth Sortation LLC, in connection with a 20-year contract with the Southeastern Public Service Authority of Virginia (SPSA). The transaction establishes a long-term partnership under which Commonwealth Sortation LLC will provide solid waste processing services for SPSA, the regional waste authority serving South Hampton Roads, and its eight member communities and approximately 1.2 million residents. The agreement builds on a nearly two-year pilot project in Portsmouth, Virginia, which deployed an AMP ONE™ system capable of processing up to 150 tons of locally sourced municipal solid waste (MSW) per day. Under the new arrangement, AMP will scale its technology across the region by deploying additional MSW sortation lines and an organics management system designed to process up to 540,000 tons annually. The parties describe the program as facilitating the largest recycling project in the country, with the organics system and sortation infrastructure intended to divert approximately half of the waste SPSA brings to AMP facilities. AMP’s solution uses AI-driven sorting technology that combines cameras, robotics and pneumatic jets to detect and remove recyclables and organics from bagged trash. The company expects the expanded operation to create roughly 100 jobs and to develop transferable technical skills among local production operators, distinguishing the model from legacy facilities that concentrate staffing in manual sorting roles. Eversheds Sutherland represented client(s) AMP Robotics and Commonwealth Sortation LLC with a team composed by: David McIndoe, Energy Partner; George Bernhardt, Real Estate Counsel; and Wendy Simon-Pearson, Energy Senior Associate.
