People’s Property Portfolio acquires Grade II listed 17-21 Chapel Street in Bradford

"Schofield Sweeney acted pro bono for People’s Property Portfolio (PPP) in the acquisition of the Grade II listed 17–21 Chapel Street in Little Germany, Bradford, from Bradford Resource Centre Ltd. PPP, a Bradford-based Community Benefit Society, will restore the building as a community-owned multi-purpose venue with event and workspace facilities."

Schofield Sweeney represented People’s Property Portfolio (PPP) in the pro bono conveyancing for the acquisition of 17-21 Chapel Street in Little Germany, Bradford, from Bradford Resource Centre Ltd. The transaction completed the transfer of the Grade II listed building to PPP, a Bradford-based Community Benefit Society formed to address precarious tenancies and vacant properties owned by absentee landlords by acquiring buildings for the benefit of local people and organisations. This is PPP’s first acquisition. The society’s board brings prior experience developing city spaces, including involvement with Bradford 2025’s ‘Loading Bay’ venue. 17-21 Chapel Street, originally established as The Old Quaker School for boys in 1830, most recently housed the Bradford Resource Centre, which provided support services between 1979 and 2021. Largely closed to the public since 2021, the property was transferred to PPP when Bradford Resource Centre Ltd agreed to hand over the keys in recognition of PPP’s commitment to retain the building for local benefit. PPP is now fundraising to reinvent the premises as a multi-purpose, community-owned asset, including a public event space and workspaces for creative and community organisations, and is engaging local people and volunteers to help deliver the project. Schofield Sweeney represented People’s Property Portfolio (PPP) with a team composed by: David Ryan, Associate, Real Estate, who carried out the essential pro bono conveyancing work on the transaction.
