Widower Instructs Medical Negligence Lawyers to Seek Answers Over Wife's Post‑Birth Brain Bleed

"Irwin Mitchell is representing Rafal, the widower of Ilona Kazik, at an inquest into her death following a post‑caesarean brain bleed at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. The inquest is due to begin 17 November at Lawrence Court, Huntingdon, and is expected to last up to five days."

Irwin Mitchell has been instructed by Rafal, the widower of Ilona Kazik, to represent him in relation to an upcoming inquest into his wife's death. The case concerns the death of 32‑year‑old Ilona Kazik, who suffered a major obstetric haemorrhage shortly after the birth of her son by caesarean section at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. Ilona attended the hospital on 13 February 2023 after her waters broke and was found to have high blood pressure; she was given medication and sent home, returning later that day and then again for a planned induction of labour. Following delivery, Ilona complained of headache, blurred vision, vomiting and drowsiness. A CT scan revealed a bleed on the brain and further imaging at Addenbrooke’s Hospital showed a major brain injury. Doctors concluded treatment was not possible, life support was withdrawn, and she died on 25 February 2023, eleven days after her son Antony was born. Ilona did not survive to hold her baby. Rafal, who has given up work to care for Antony, has engaged Irwin Mitchell’s medical negligence specialists to seek answers about the care provided at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. An inquest into Ilona’s death is scheduled to begin at Lawrence Court in Huntingdon on 17 November and is expected to last up to five days. Rafal has stated that, while nothing can bring his wife back, the inquest is an important step to establish what happened and to identify lessons to improve maternity safety. Irwin Mitchell represented client(s) Rafal, the widower of Ilona Kazik, with a team composed by: Daniella Gregory, specialist medical negligence lawyer.
