Hogan Lovells advises Calisen on €100m smart metering partnership in Germany

"Hogan Lovells advised Calisen on its first international launch in Germany through a €100 million smart metering partnership with Energy Metering Germany (EMG), an Octopus Group MPO. The deal follows a pilot installing c.10,000 meters and establishes an MSA enabling up to €100m of nationwide smart metering investments."

Hogan Lovells advised Calisen on the launch of its first international operation in Germany and on a €100 million smart metering partnership with Energy Metering Germany (EMG), a competitive Meter Point Operator established by Octopus Group. The transaction comprises a pioneering Meter Services Agreement (MSA) between Calisen and EMG under which Calisen is positioned to deploy up to €100 million in smart metering assets across Germany. The agreement follows a pilot scheme launched in February 2025 between Calisen and EMG, which has resulted in the installation of approximately 10,000 smart meters to date. The MSA framework is described as setting a new benchmark for collaboration between Meter Point Operators (MPOs) and Meter Asset Providers (MAPs) and is expected to serve as a blueprint for future partnerships as the German smart metering market develops. “This transaction represents an important step in the digitalization of Germany’s energy infrastructure and demonstrates the growing relevance of international collaboration in this field,” said Dr. Tobias Faber, Global Head of the Infrastructure, Energy, Resources and Projects practice at Hogan Lovells in Frankfurt. “We are pleased to have supported longstanding client Calisen in establishing this innovative framework for smart metering investments in the German market.” Hogan Lovells represented Calisen with a team composed by: Dr. Tobias Faber (Partner, Global Head of the Infrastructure, Energy, Resources and Projects practice, Frankfurt); Pia Heckenberger (Associate, IERP, Frankfurt); Juhani Plümacher (Associate, IERP, Frankfurt); Tobias Schwalm (Associate, IERP, Frankfurt); Dr. Florian Alexander Wesche (Senior Counsel, IERP Regulatory, Düsseldorf); Katharina Rath (Counsel, IERP Regulatory, Düsseldorf); Dr. Carla Luh (Partner, IERP/Finance, Hamburg); Dr. Marzieh Rad (IERP/Finance, Frankfurt); Dr. Richard Reimer (Partner, Financial Services Regulatory, Frankfurt); Andreas Doser (Counsel, Financial Services Regulatory, Frankfurt); Maximilian Broermann (Partner, Infrastructure M&A, Frankfurt); Alicia Bäuerle (Associate, Infrastructure M&A, Frankfurt); Jean-Pierre Tschauder (Associate, Infrastructure M&A, Frankfurt); Prof. Dr. Fabian Pfuhl (Counsel, Data Protection, Frankfurt); Felix Ackermann (Senior Associate, Data Protection, Frankfurt); Phil Brown (Partner, IERP, London).
