BCLP Marks Veterans Day with Nationwide Pro Bono Training on Military Discharge Upgrades

BCLP and Citigroup’s law department assisted veterans seeking military discharge upgrades in a pro bono initiative conducted in partnership with the University of Missouri Veterans Clinic. The initiative took the form of a virtual training session held on Oct. 29 that brought together 50 lawyers and paralegals from 12 BCLP offices alongside 16 legal professionals from Citi’s law department. The training was organized in honor of Veterans Day and National Veterans and Military Families Month and was designed to equip volunteers with the knowledge needed to support veterans whose discharge status limits access to benefits, employment and housing. Participants learned to address discharge issues arising from combat injuries, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma and historical discriminatory policies such as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." The partnership, which began in 2024, continues to represent veterans on a wide range of discharge matters. The Mizzou Law Veterans Clinic provided the training and resources, and no prior litigation experience was required to participate. BCLP assisted veterans seeking discharge upgrades with a team composed by: David Chambers (St. Louis associate and lead BCLP organizer), Ed Tjaden, Ketrina Bakewell and Ellen Bonacorsi. Citigroup’s law department assisted veterans seeking discharge upgrades with a team composed by: Gretchen Wallace, Emily Elam and April Waugh.
