The project raised £5 billion in debt through private financial investors, marking a significant milestone as the first nuclear project globally to achieve this. The financing unlocks full-scale construction of the Suffolk-based plant, which aims to deliver cheaper, low-carbon electricity and save £2 billion annually for consumers. Global law firm Clifford Chance advised Sizewell C Limited on a landmark transaction involving the financing of the first nuclear power project globally to be funded by independent, private financial investors. The transaction included Sizewell C Limited reaching financial close with a £5 billion debt raise backed by the BpifranceAE export credit facility, supported by thirteen banks. This financing model marks a significant milestone as the first new nuclear project in the UK to attract substantial private finance. The funds will enable full-scale construction of the Suffolk-based plant, which is expected to generate £2 billion in annual savings across the future low-carbon electricity system, leading to cheaper power for consumers. Clifford Chance's multi-disciplinary team was led by Partners John Wilkins, head of the firm's Global Nuclear Group, and Praveen Jagadish.
