"Kansai Electric Power Makes First Offshore Wind Investment in Simply Blue Energy"

"Freshfields advised Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO) on its majority investment in Simply Blue Energy (SBE), an offshore wind development company based in Ireland. This marks KEPCO's first investment in offshore wind and aligns with its Zero Carbon Vision 2050 strategy to expand renewable energy. The transaction is expected to close in late 2025."

Global law firm Freshfields and Matheson LLP participated in the transaction, advising Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO) and providing Irish law advice, respectively. The transaction involved KEPCO's majority investment in Simply Blue Energy (OSW) Limited (SBE), an offshore wind development company based in Cork, Ireland. SBE specializes in offshore wind projects, including floating offshore wind projects, primarily across Europe. This marks KEPCO's first investment in an offshore wind developer and aligns with its Kansai Electric Power Group Zero Carbon Vision 2050. The transaction is expected to close in late 2025. The Freshfields team was led by partners Nick Jones (London) and Gordon Palmquist (Tokyo), senior associates Maria Zaitseva (London) and Chiyokazu Shindo (Tokyo), and associates Laura Hibbert, Danyela van der Sande, and Nii Sekan (all London), with support from partner Takeshi Nakao (Tokyo).
