"Akerman Supports Revitalization of Historic Kingsbridge Armory and Affordable Housing Development in the Bronx"

"Akerman is assisting 8th Regiment Partners and NYCEDC in the redevelopment of the historic Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx. The project includes restoring North America’s largest armory, creating a community hub with cultural, recreational, and workforce spaces, and constructing 500 affordable housing units. The redevelopment involves rezoning, permits for a 17,000-capacity live events venue, and approvals from preservation commissions. Supported by public investment, the initiative aims to provide economic opportunities and affordable housing for Bronx residents. Akerman LLP represented 8th Regiment Partners in partnership with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) in the redevelopment of the historic Kingsbridge Armory in the Northwest Bronx. The transaction involved the restoration and adaptive reuse of North America’s largest armory, which features a 180,000-square-foot column-free drill hall. Additionally, the project includes the construction of approximately 500 affordable housing units on an adjacent parcel. Key land use actions included rezoning, obtaining a special permit for a live events venue with a capacity of 17,000 people, and securing approvals from the Landmarks Preservation and Public Design Commissions. Akerman also managed the disposition process and negotiated the development agreement and ground lease with the City of New York. Supported by significant public investment, the redevelopment aims to create a vibrant community hub offering cultural, recreational, and workforce development spaces, while delivering affordable housing and economic opportunities for Bronx residents.
