"Hogan Lovells Facilitates Historic America’s Cup Partnership Agreement"

"Hogan Lovells has played a crucial advisory role in establishing the America’s Cup Partnership, a historic agreement between Emirates Team New Zealand and Britain's Athena Racing. This partnership marks the first time in the event's 174-year history that competing teams will share governance and commercial management, aiming to enhance the competition and engage fans globally. The new governance structure will include a board with representatives from each team and will focus on long-term growth and innovation in the America’s Cup, which will be held every two years. Teams have until October 31, 2025, to join the partnership for the upcoming Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup."

Hogan Lovells served as the key legal advisor to Athena Racing, the Challenger of Record, in the landmark America’s Cup Partnership deal, which also involved the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand. This historic agreement marks a significant shift in the governance of the America’s Cup, the oldest international sports trophy, as it establishes a new mutual governance structure that unites all participating teams under a shared commercial framework. This partnership aims to enhance the management of the competition, promote economic sharing, and increase global fan engagement, marking the first time in the event's 174-year history that competing teams have collaborated in this manner.
