Additionally, Maxell's requests for enhanced damages and a permanent injunction were denied, with further issues on willfulness and damages deferred until after an appeal."

DLA Piper represented Samsung Electronics Co. in a significant legal victory against Maxell Ltd. in the Eastern District of Texas. In this case, the court overturned a May 2025 jury verdict that had awarded Maxell US$112 million for alleged infringement of three patents. The court granted Samsung’s motion for judgment as a matter of law, determining that Maxell had not met its burden of proof, invalidating claims in two of the three asserted patents, and finding insufficient evidence to support the infringement verdict on all three patents. Additionally, US District Judge Robert Schroeder III denied Maxell’s requests for enhanced damages, interest, and a permanent injunction, while deferring issues of willfulness and damages until after the appeal. The DLA Piper trial team included Partners Sean Cunningham (Washington, DC), Erin Gibson (Washington, DC), Erik Fuehrer (Palo Alto), Mark Fowler (Palo Alto), Brian Erickson (Austin), Michael Jay (Los Angeles), James Heintz (Reston), Gianni Minutoli (Reston), and Helena Kiepura (Washington, DC). They were supported by Associates Martin Ellison (Los Angeles), Sangwon Sung (San Francisco), Paulina Starostka (Chicago), and Benjamin Mueller (Chicago).
