Crowell & Moring Appointed by Kroll to Assist in Administration of Woodville Litigation Funding

"Crowell & Moring’s London restructuring and insolvency team, which acted for a group of investors to secure a contested High Court administration order, has been retained by Kroll Advisory to assist the joint administrators of Woodville Consultants Limited (Woodville Litigation Funding) following allegations of fraud and misapplication of investor funds in a loan book estimated at £330m."

Crowell & Moring’s London restructuring and insolvency team represented a group of investors that secured a contested High Court administration order and has since been retained by Kroll Advisory to assist the joint administrators of Woodville Consultants Limited (trading as Woodville Litigation Funding). Kroll Advisory appointed joint administrators following Woodville’s entry into administration on 16 July. Woodville is a motor finance litigation funder with an estimated £330 million loan book and more than 300,000 claims. Crowell & Moring first acted for the investor group in obtaining the contested administration order and has been engaged by Kroll to support the wider administration process. The company’s collapse follows investor allegations of widespread fraud, misapplication of investor funds and suspicions that the scheme operated as a Ponzi arrangement. The administrators are reviewing and investigating the company’s books and affairs; initial reviews have described the books and records as unsatisfactory and in a state of disarray. Investigations are ongoing and, if the allegations are substantiated, the Woodville investment scheme could be among the largest investment frauds in UK history. The administrators and advisers are focused on assessing whether the business can be rescued, preserving the loan book, liaising with the Financial Conduct Authority and maximising recoveries for investors, including the recovery of amounts advanced to law firms. Crowell & Moring represented the investor group and has been retained by Kroll to assist the administrators, with a team composed by: Paul Muscutt (restructuring and insolvency partner), Cathryn Williams (team lead), counsel Philippa Lai, counsel Bethany Warner, associate Aisha Zulfiqar and trainee solicitor Phoebe Kinsman.
