John Paik Joins Crowell & Moring as Partner in Orange County Intellectual Property Department
"John Paik joins Crowell & Moring as a partner in its Orange County Intellectual Property Department, focusing on patents and IP for life sciences, technology and AI, including licensing, portfolio strategy, enforcement and transaction diligence."
Paik joins Crowell from GRAIL, where he served as senior director and head of intellectual property. At Crowell he will focus his practice on advising technology and life sciences clients—including emerging companies and venture-backed startups—on licensing, patent portfolio strategy and management, IP enforcement and defense, due diligence for financings and transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and IPO readiness.
Paik brings more than two decades of experience at leading law firms and technology companies. He previously led IP protection efforts at GRAIL for wet lab discoveries and software, machine learning, and analytics platforms, and oversaw global IP strategy for novel cancer detection technologies. Earlier in his career he was co-chair of the Electrical Engineering Practice Group at Knobbe Martens, where he advised on patent, licensing, and transactional matters and led strategic portfolio development, and he served as counsel at O'Melveny, focusing on IP-related transactions and disputes. His practice has included management of patent portfolios across computer hardware and software, surgical robotics, medical devices, digital pathology, bioinformatics, and automation, as well as offensive and defensive patent strategies, freedom-to-operate assessments, inter partes review proceedings, and successful arguments before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
