Roth returns to Jones Day from his role as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Division at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he served as the senior deputy overseeing one of the Department’s largest litigating divisions. In that capacity he helped shape the Division’s litigation strategy and manage its extensive docket; he served four months as Acting Assistant Attorney General and, while at DOJ, argued 11 appeals, bringing his career total to more than 50.
Prior to his government service, Roth was a partner at Jones Day, where he developed a distinguished practice in appellate and constitutional litigation. He has argued multiple cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and federal courts of appeals. A former clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Roth earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School.
