Roberto J. Gonzalez has joined Paul Hastings LLP as a partner and chair of Sanctions & AML, based in Washington, D.C.

Gonzalez joins Paul Hastings from Paul, Weiss, where he served as co‑chair of the Economic Sanctions and Anti‑Money Laundering practice and oversaw the firm’s consumer financial protection matters. In private practice he represented leading financial institutions, fintech platforms and technology companies facing complex regulatory, enforcement and reputational challenges.

Gonzalez also brings extensive government experience. He has served as deputy general counsel at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, principal deputy general counsel at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and as White House associate counsel and special assistant to the president. He clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens and U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Guido Calabresi. His practice spans sanctions, anti‑money laundering, export controls, cybersecurity, consumer protection, digital assets and payments, and False Claims Act matters, and he regularly represents clients in high‑profile investigations and regulatory proceedings before federal agencies, banking regulators, state authorities and congressional committees.
