Nelson joins Norton Rose Fulbright as a partner in the firm’s intellectual property practice, specializing in patent prosecution and post‑grant proceedings. He advises emerging companies and global enterprises on patent prosecution, strategic counseling, portfolio development and post‑grant disputes, and manages patent portfolios at every stage for clients in consumer markets, medical devices, technology, digital health, transportation, aerospace and telecommunications. He also assists large corporations with global portfolio expansion and guides early‑stage companies through initial patent filings and portfolio development.
Nelson brings more than two decades of experience developing strategies across litigation, mediation, arbitration and post‑grant proceedings, and has represented both petitioners and patent owners in more than 100 inter partes reviews. He regularly conducts freedom‑to‑operate analyses, pre‑litigation risk assessments and issues opinion letters. Licensed in Minnesota and with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, he earned his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology. He has been recognized in the IAM Patent 1000 since 2020 and was named Pro Bono Champion of the Year by the Great North Innocence Project in 2024.
