Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney Adds Intellectual Property Shareholder in Chicago
"Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney adds Sharon A. Hwang as a shareholder in Chicago to its intellectual property team; she will work in IP with a focus on patent litigation."
Hwang is a skilled and sophisticated intellectual property attorney with more than 30 years of experience. She practices in all areas of IP law with a particular emphasis on patent litigation. A dedicated, hands-on courtroom advocate, she has tried and litigated dozens of cases and has briefed and argued numerous appeals. She has successfully represented parties in high-stakes patent litigation in federal district courts, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Notably, she led a team of attorneys in securing one of the largest enhanced damages awards in patent history, a $254 million judgment following appeals to the Federal Circuit and the Supreme Court. She has also briefed and argued numerous inter partes reviews before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
In her full-service IP practice, Hwang helps clients maximize the value of their intellectual property and protect their investments in research and development. She advises on IP strategy and the development of patent programs, supports clients on trade secret and copyright matters, and provides training on IP protection and risk mitigation. Her experience spans a range of technologies, including medical devices, electronics, cellular telephony, food and beverages, and biosimilars.
Buchanan said Hwang’s addition expands the firm’s IP litigation bench in Chicago and will enhance value for clients. Hwang said she was attracted to the firm’s culture—including its focus on inclusivity and collaborative approach among practice groups—and looks forward to expanding her IP practice within a full-service national firm offering FDA, antitrust, M&A, and commercial litigation services.
