Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe Welcomes Former USPTO Solicitor Farheena Rasheed to Supreme Court & Appellate Practice

At the USPTO, Rasheed served as the agency’s chief intellectual property litigation attorney and principal advisor on national IP policy. In that capacity she led the U.S. government’s litigation strategy and served as lead counsel in well over 500 appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, with a significant number reaching the U.S. Supreme Court. She also acted as the USPTO’s liaison to the U.S. Department of Justice and was the primary advisor to the U.S. Solicitor General on Supreme Court IP cases.
Rasheed joined Orrick to practice in the firm’s Supreme Court & Appellate group with a focus on life sciences intellectual property, collaborating with the firm’s life sciences IP practice. While at the USPTO she led the transformation of the agency’s intervention and amicus participation practice, developing strategies for evaluating over 500 AIA post-grant appeals for possible intervention or selective amicus participation, and served on the USPTO AI/Emerging Technologies Working Group.
Prior to the USPTO, Rasheed was in private practice and clerked for the Honorable Marvin J. Garbis of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and the Honorable Arthur J. Gajarsa of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. She holds a Master of Science in Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and has published research on DNA topoisomerase-targeted chemotherapy.
