McGuireWoods associate Matthew Weinstein to join Virginia administration as Deputy Secretary of Administration

McGuireWoods Tysons associate Matthew Weinstein will join the administration of Virginia Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger as deputy secretary of administration, effective Jan. 19. His last day at McGuireWoods is Jan. 16.

Weinstein, who joined McGuireWoods in December 2019 as an associate, is a land use and zoning attorney experienced in obtaining entitlement approvals in Northern Virginia with a focus in Arlington County. In addition to his land use practice, he advises clients on political law matters, including campaign finance, lobbying and gift regulations nationwide.

In 2023 Weinstein was appointed to the Virginia State Board of Elections by Gov. Glenn Youngkin. He has served as senior staff on several statewide races in Virginia, was chief of staff for a senior member of the Virginia House of Delegates for several sessions and worked for U.S. Sen. Mark Warner throughout law school. He will assume the deputy secretary role overseeing the day-to-day management of several state agencies, including the Virginia Department of Elections, the Virginia IT Agency, the Department of General Services and the Department of Human Resource Management.
